Comme des Garçons SS06 runway jacket

The SS06 collection from Rei Kawakubo explored distortion of the human silhouette through controlled draping and sculptural manipulation of fabric. Rather than relying on prints or surface decoration, the garments focused on volume, tension, and asymmetry reshaping the body through construction alone.

This piece exemplifies that approach through its highly engineered draped back panel. From the front, the garment appears restrained, with a minimal cropped silhouette and soft rounded collar. The back, however, reveals a dense system of gathered fabric that creates a twisted, almost spine-like structure running vertically through the garment.

The tension created by this ruching pulls the fabric into organic folds, giving the piece a sense of movement and controlled imbalance. The asymmetry continues through the hem and wrap construction, allowing the garment to shift shape depending on how it sits on the body.

A strong example of Kawakubo’s mid-2000s work, where the focus moved toward sculptural form and abstraction — less about wearability, more about reshaping the body through garment architecture.
