Jean Paul Gaultier

Bondage Parka

700

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Autumn/Winter 2003 collection marked a shift toward militaristic and aviation-inspired design language, where technical construction and restrictive detailing became central to the silhouette. Moving away from his earlier graphic-heavy work, Gaultier focused on structure, utility, and modularity — introducing strap systems, harness-like closures, and hybrid garments that blurred the line between outerwear and equipment.

This parka embodies that direction through a layered, multi-component build. A cotton outer shell is combined with an integrated nylon utility vest, secured by adjustable webbing straps that run across both the front and back of the garment. The design reflects the “parachute” concept seen throughout the collection, where functional elements are not hidden but instead define the piece visually.

Gold-tone hardware and heavy-duty LAMPO zippers reinforce the technical aspect, while the multiple cargo pockets and reinforced paneling emphasize practicality. The hooded parka silhouette adds length and weight compared to more common cropped or puffer variations from the same season, giving the piece a more grounded, utilitarian presence.

Less frequently seen than the bomber and puffer iterations from AW2003, this extended parka version stands out for its complete strap system and hybrid construction, making it a strong representation of the collection’s functional approach to design.
