FW18 Ruched Zip Top

A striking example of Tom Ford’s late-2010s approach to glamour, where the body becomes the central element of the design.

This black top is built almost entirely through ruching. The fabric is gathered from the neckline down through the torso, creating deep, continuous folds that pull the silhouette inward and exaggerate the waist. From the back, the ruching converges toward the centre in an almost symmetrical pattern, giving the garment a sculptural quality that changes completely when worn.

It belongs to the world of Tom Ford at his most unapologetically sensual: black, precise and deliberately provocative. Ford had spent his career refining this language, first at Gucci in the 1990s, where he helped define an era of overtly sexual luxury, and later through his own label. By the late 2010s, those references had become part of his own visual vocabulary.

A beautifully understated piece at first glance, but exceptionally constructed once you see it up close.
