A beautiful early-2000s Dolce & Gabbana piece built around Marie Antoinette. Printed across sheer mesh, the image of the French queen is transformed into something sensual and almost ghostly: her portrait, pale skin, elaborate dress and flowers appear and disappear as the transparent fabric moves over the body. The dark blue collar and button placket give the shirt the structure of a traditional menswear blouse, while the fitted silhouette and delicate ruffled detailing push it firmly back into D&G’s world of seduction and theatrical femininity.

The piece comes from the Fall/Winter 2003 Dolce & Gabbana collection, a particularly interesting moment in the designers’ work. The collection was described at the time as “techno romance” a collision between D&G’s established codes of corsetry, sensual dressing and romantic imagery and a much more contemporary, almost futuristic wardrobe. Vogue noted the collection’s return to house signatures including sharply fitted silhouettes, corsetry, shirting and dramatic eveningwear.

18th-century aristocratic imagery rendered on ultra-modern transparent mesh. Marie Antoinette becomes less a historical figure and more a D&G fantasy on this particular piece.
